What to Expect at Your Child's First Martial Arts Class

    July 14, 2026 4 min read

First classes can feel intimidating — for kids and for parents. Good news: we've done thousands of them. Here's exactly what to expect so you can walk in relaxed.

    Before you come

    • Wear comfortable athletic clothes — t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants
    • No uniform needed for your trial; kids train barefoot on the mat
    • Arrive 10 minutes early so we can meet you and get your child comfortable
    • Bring a water bottle

    The first 5 minutes

A coach will greet you at the front desk, show you around, and answer any last questions. You'll fill out a quick trial form if you haven't already. Parents relax in the viewing area — you can watch the whole class.

    In class

    • Warm-up: fun, movement-based games to get bodies loose and brains switched on
    • Fundamentals: age-appropriate kicks, punches, blocks, and stances
    • Focus drills: listening, following directions, controlling the body
    • Cool-down and a short talk on the day's character word (respect, focus, effort, etc.)
    • High-fives and a chat with the coach at the end

What if my child freezes up?

Completely normal. We've seen it all — the kid who won't leave your side, the one who cries, the one who runs around the mat. We're patient, we don't push, and day two is almost always better than day one.
